Family in Malay

Hi again! Okay, even though Malaysian isn't having same skin color, we still call each other with family or relative calling name. I'm not sure why we do that, but by doing so we can feel that every where we go is our home and every one is our family. It made us become one big Malaysian family. So don't feel shock when Malaysian randomly call the waiter 'brother' or 'uncle' or 'auntie'. That just us. You can do so if you want to.

Before we start, let's do some recap on our last lesson. Always remember how to pronounce the vocal alphabets.

A sounds like you open up your mouth - "Ahhh"
I sounds like you showing your teeth - "Eeee"
U sounds like u in 'flu' - "Uuu"
E can sounds like e in elephant or e in earning
O sounds like you pronounce the letter it's own - "Ooo"

So, let's start our lesson!

Mother - ibu / emak (ee-bu / e *e in earn - mug) *usually used :  mak*

Father - Bapa / Ayah (Ba *its like bar without 'r' - pa *like papa / A - yah)

Elder brother - Abang (Ah - bang *open your mouth with the 'a') *usually used :  bang*

Elder sister - Kakak (*remember how to pronounce A?) *usually used :  Akak*

Younger sibling - Adik (Ah - dik) *usually used :  Dik*

Auntie - Mak Cik (mug - cik) *usually used :  Acik*

Uncle - Pak Cik (Park - cik) *usually used :  Acik*

Son / Daughter - Anak (Ah - nak *its like knuckle)

Nephew / Niece - Anak buah / Anak saudara (Ah - nak bu-ah / sau *its like pronounce Saudi  - da -ra)

Cousin - Sepupu (Sir - pu - pu *its like put)

Grandmother - Nenek (nay - neck) *in Malaysia we call our grandparents differently based on place commonly.

Grandfather - Datuk (Dah - took) *usually used :  Atuk*

BONUS When you call your couple 'honey' its called 'sayang' in Malay♡

Malay Tips :

- When calling someone older and looks like in our grandma age, don't just straight call her nenek! Instead call her mak cik.

- If you are not sure what to use either adik or kakak, I personally say just use adik. But if clearly you know she is older than you, use kakak okay?

- Don't be shy to use Malay in public in Malaysia. Even if you're not mastered yet, just use a pinch of it. For example, when you asking for the price "Bang, how much is it?" . It make the seller feel comfortable with a foreigner and you can improve you Malay skills slowly.

For next lesson I'll share how to count in Malay. So, stay tuned~~

Greetings in Malay

Here, we start with basic greetings we used every day. And Hi would sounds the same in Malay.

For introducing, I'd like to inform that Malay pronounciation totally like Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti sound. There is no such thing like how a mad sound, the a will sound how a in mart was pronounced.

For e, we have two ways to pronounce it. E how e in erhu was pronounced and e in enamel was pronounce. For examples, six in malay is enam (e in erhu) and tail in malay is ekor (e in exotic)

The way I is pronounce in malay is like how e is pronounce in english. Example, if the malay word spelled Li, it's like Lee in english. And it won't sound like lie, line or else... It just stick to one pronounciation.

U, it's sound like u. It different from english, because u in english can be pronounce like a was pronounced sometimes. But not in malay. Think how 'flu' is pronounce, that totally how u in malay words are pronounced.

Will start our lesson here.

Good morning - Selamat pagi (Sir-lump-mart  pa-gi) *after mid night till before noon
Good afternoon - Selamat tengahari (te *e in erhu -ngah  ha-ri)
Good evening - Selamat petang (pe *e in erhu - tang *sounds like tongue) *1p.m. - 6p.m.
Good night - Selamat malam (ma-lump) *7p.m. - before mid night

We use greetings based on the clock just like the Japanese but majority of us don't use the time like them. Shame on us. #janjimelayu

Going on,

Thank you - Terima kasih
Thank you very much - Terima kasih banyak

Next is we'll step into some events,

Happy New Year - Selamat tahun baru
Happy birthday - Selamat hari lahir
Happy mother's day - Selamat hari ibu
Happy father's day - Selamat hari bapa
Happy teacher's day - Selamat hari guru

✨BONUS✨ Good Luck - Selamat maju jaya / Semoga berjaya

🗣 Malay tips :
- If you don't want to sound like foreigners during calling food delivery, pronounce words that ends with -a  sound like how you pronounce u in fur or e in mere
Example : How much - Berapa → Berape

- Don't use Lah, Lorh, Meh accent if you really don't know how to use it. Because it will sounds fool if you use the wrong term in certain situations.

For next time, I'll share about Family and Relatives were called in Malays. Stay tuned~
